World No. 32 Carlos Alcaraz was one of the revelations of the season as the Spaniard became the youngest man ever to reach the quarter-finals of the US Open in the Open Era when he defeated Peter Gojowczyk in the 4th round after having defeated Cameron Norrie and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the earlier rounds of the 2021 US Open.

Alcaraz then went on to reach the semi-finals of the ATP-500 event in Vienna and made it to the 3rd round of the 2021 Paris Masters. Having qualified for the ATP NextGen Finals in Milan, where he won the title dropping only one set in the tournament to clinch his second title of the year after having won his first-ever ATP title in Croatia.

Alcaraz was set to play for the Spanish team at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals, but he tested positive for Covid-19 on the eve of their first match and was put into isolation. He also withdrew from the 2022 ATP Cup that is scheduled to begin from 1st January in Sydney in order to recover fully from the virus.

With the 2022 season around the corner, Alcaraz’s coach Juan Carlos Ferrero talked about the goals the teenager has set for the next year where greater things will be expected from the teenager who has impressed the tennis fraternity with his performances this season across surfaces.

“The main challenge, as I have said on other occasions, is to maintain the level of tennis that he played in the latter part of the season, to be competitive against the best tennis players, that is. It is important for his performance, this will allow him to get closer to the top 15 in the standings. That would be the goal for next year,” said Ferrero in his interview with Spanish media Gazzetta.

With the ATP Cup scheduled to conclude on 9th January and the 2022 Australian Open set to begin from the 17th January, Carlos will have to plan his comeback as he would like to have some preparations before going into the first Grand Slam of the season.

With two events in Melbourne and Adelaide scheduled alongside the ATP Cup in week 1 followed by two events in Adelaide and Sydney before the Grand Slam kicks off in Melbourne. Carlos can be expected to return in the second week as he already has withdrawn from the national team competition in Sydney.
