American 17-year old Coco Gauff is currently one of the best talents on the WTA tour. She has proved her mettle time and again and has been consistent with her performances this season.
She had an exceptional clay court season where she made it to the quarterfinals of a major for the first time. She is currently playing at Indian Wells and is through to the third round after beating Caroline Garcia in three sets6-3,6-7(2),6-1. She will now face 21st seed Paula Badosa in the third round on Monday.
Talking to the media, Gauff spoke highly about 20-time grand slam champion Roger Federer. She said that Federer is the greatest both on and off the court and believes that no one has any bad thing to say about him.
“Roger Federer is the greatest on and off the court,” she said. “He is a great guy, I spoke to him a couple of times and he’s been a great support for me. I don’t think anybody has one bad thing to say about him.”
Coco Gauff hopeful of winning a major next year
Two teenagers, Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez played the US Open final this year and have paved a way for young stars to step up on big occasions. Gauff said that considering she’s still younger than both Emma and Leylah, their heroics have definitely inspired her.
“It was definitely inspiring for me, especially since I’m younger than both of them,” the American said.
Gauff, who has made her debut at Indian Wells also said that she is hopeful that she could win a major next year. “It just shows how much a year makes a difference, and what I can hopefully do next year.”
