US teen sensation Coco Gauff reached the Fourth Round of the French Open for the first time after fellow American Jennifer Brady had to retire with a foot injury having lost the first set 6-1.

The 17-year-old dropped just a single game to Brady in a first set which lasted just 23 minutes on the last match of the day at Court Suzanne Lenglen. But suddenly the match ended abruptly as a tearful Brady realised she could not continue due to a foot injury(bone bruising).

Brady simply said to Gauff: “I’m so sorry!” Gauff then hugged Brady for a while and consolidated her. She then clapped alongwith the crowd for Brady, as she made an exit from the court.

“I have been struggling since Rome. I pulled out of the tournament there second round because I have a pretty bad foot injury, playing in a lot of pain,” Brady said.

“I actually was considering not even playing here. Just up until the day before. I was, like, might as well give it a shot. Today, I woke up and it was just worse. I couldn’t really play my game. Moving about 20%.”

In the press conference later, Gauff praised Brady and revealed how nice of a person she is. She also expected her to be back on court at Wimbledon.

“It’s unfortunate because I have known Jenny very well, and she’s such a nice person,” Gauff said. “I don’t think if you ask every player on tour, no one is going to say anything bad about her because she’s always laughing and joking around. So I just hope that by the time Wimbledon comes she’ll be healed up and ready to compete at 100 per cent again.”

24th seed Coco Gauff will be up against 25th seed Ons Jabeur in the Fourth Round on Sunday where she will try to reach her first grand slam quarterfinal.
