Raducanu, a qualifier, was to face Australian Open runner-up Jennifer Brady in the first round originally but following Brady’s withdrawal due to injury, she was drawn against lucky loser Stefanie Vogele.

The Brit has been in amazing form since her Wimbledon breakthrough and climbed up to as high as No.150 in the world. She came into the US Open with a runner-up finish at the Chicago Challenger where she beat top seed Alison Van Uytvanck in the first round before losing to Clara Tauson in the final.

At Flushing Meadows, she eased into the main draw with three straight sets victories and in the first round against Vogele, she was as clinical as ever. She meant business right from the beginning and didn’t take much time to break the Swiss’ serve. And with a double break’s advantage, she stormed away with the opening set 6-2.

The second set was no different from the first. Vogele didn’t have answers for Raducanu’s strong baseline shots and was soon broken. The Brit 18-year old backer up the break with a strong hold and eventually won the set 6-3. She will now face Chinese Zhang Shuai in the second round on Thursday.
