The Sea Life London Aquarium has named a penguin after teenage tennis sensation Emma Raducanu. Raducanu hogged the spotlight when she won the women’s singles title at the US Open. The British player was the first woman from her nation to lift the trophy in over four decades.

Along with her, vaccine developer Dame Sarah Gilbert. too got a bird named after her. Catherine Pritchard, the aquarium’s general manager, said: “Now the sex of the penguin chicks has been established it is a celebratory moment for the aquarium. We wanted to name our new females after two standout women of the past 18 months.

A debut to remember for Emma Raducanu at the US Open

Emma Raducanu scripted one of the greatest underdog stories in tennis when the 18-year old World No. 150 went on to defeat Canada’s 19-year old Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-3 in the finals of the US Open 2021 to win the Grand Slam title. Having started in the tournament as a qualifier, Emma won all of her matches in straight-sets including the finals and surprised and impressed the whole tennis fraternity.

Emma became the youngest woman to win a major since Maria Sharpova, who won the 2004 Wimbledon. The British teenager became the first qualifier in history to win a Grand Slam title. Raducanu is the 2nd woman after Bianca Andreescu to win the US Open title on her debut at the Grand Slam. She is also the 5th player in the Open Era to reach the semi-finals of the US Open on their debut.
