“We want verifiable proof”: European Union asks China to release substantial evidence that tennis player Peng Shuai is safe

There have been several attempts from China to misguide the world into believing that Peng Shuai is completely safe, however, fortunately, the world is refusing to accept them. Peng still has not been seen or heard publicly ever since she accused former Vice Premier of China Zhang Gaoli of sexual assault in a social media post.

Tennis stars and top leaders were continuously pressurizing China to issue a detailed clarification on the issue. In reply, the Chinese government issued a letter, allegedly written by Peng to the WTA Chairman which stated that the tennis star is doing fine. Moreover, they also organized a video call between Peng and Thomas Bach which was also not accepted as credible evidence as the recording of the interaction has not been made public, all we have is a screenshot.

China has even claimed that the United States is trying to make this issue bigger than it is. The world has had enough and is now uniting to counter China. After the White House made its stand on the issue crystal clear, the European Union has also asked China to release “verifiable proof” that tennis player Peng Shuai is safe.

EU has also asked the Chinese authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the sexual assault allegations so that the guilty can be punished accordingly. “Her recent public reappearance does not ease concerns about her safety and freedom,” an EU spokesperson said.

The EU joins growing international demands, including by sport professionals, for assurances that she is free and not under threat,” the EU said in a statement. “In this spirit, the EU requests the Chinese government to provide verifiable proof of Peng Shuai’s safety, well-being and whereabouts. The EU urges the Chinese authorities to conduct a full, fair and transparent investigation into her allegations of sexual assault.”

The EU strongly opposes the use of the practice of enforced disappearance and arbitrary detention, and calls upon China to comply with its human rights obligations under national and international law,” the EU claimed. China is trying its hardest to push the matter under the rug, however, with major political forces uniting against it, we can expect the Communist Party of China to come up with more innovative ways of hiding the truth.
