Naomi Osaka‘s return to the tennis court has been long-awaited after her troubled season in 2021 when she had to take breaks in the middle as she revealed she had been suffering from mental health issues for a while now and needed some time to recover in order to be both physically and mentally fit.

Naomi played only 9 tournaments in 2021 and only 3 tournaments including the Tokyo Olympics since she openly talked about her mental health battles at the 2021 French Open as she decided to withdraw from the Grand Slam after winning her first-round match. Her last match of the 2021 season came at the 2021 US Open where she lost in the 3rd round in her title defence against Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez who eventually reached the finals.

With the 2022 Australian Open set to begin where she will be defending champion having won the title in 2021 which was her 2nd title at the Grand Slam and 4th of her career, Naomi is set to play at the upcoming Grand Slam and recently took to her Twitter handle to post pictures of her practising at the Rod Laver Arena in the Melbourne Park where the Grand Slam will begin in 3 week’s time.

Naomi started her 2021 season at the Tour-level tournament in Melbourne where she gave a walkover before her semi-final clash fearing injury that could have caused her problems at the Australian Open. Having won the 2020 US Open, Naomi began her 2021 Australian Open campaign as the current Grand Slam champion and went on to claim the title dropping only 1 set.

Her next tournament was at the Miami Open where she lost in the quarter-finals to Maria Sakkari as the Greek woman bageled Naomi in the first set in her straight-set victory over Osaka. Naomi returned to Tour on Clay where she continued to struggle on the surface and failed to reach the 3rd round in any of her 3 tournament appearances.

After the controversy at French Open where she refused media interaction, she did not play again till the Tokyo Olympics where she lost to eventual silver medallist Marketa Vondrousova in 3rd round. She returned to tour at the Cincinnati Open but lost in the 3rd round before going out in the 3rd round of the US Open as well.
