While it has been a sensational Grand Slam season for Novak Djokovic who won 3 Grand Slam titles and could have made it 4 for the year achieving the Calendar Slam, a defeat in the finals of the 2021 US Open denied the Serbian the chance to join Rod Laver as the only other man to win all 4 Slams in a single year. Nadal and Federer however did not enjoy any success this year.

Nadal lost in the quarter-finals of the 2021 Australian Open and then in the semi-finals of the 2021 French Open with Djokovic overpowering the Spaniard in France. He picked up a toe injury at the Roland Garros which forced him to withdraw from the 2021 Wimbledon Championships and also the 2021 US Open eventually ending his season in September itself.

Federer was absent for the Australian Open this year as he was still not fit to play. He returned to Grand Slam action at the French Open but withdrew his name after his 3rd round win to stay fit for the Wimbledon but had to suffer a straight-set defeat in the quarter-finals at the All-England Club. His knee was injured again and he did not play on the tour again ending his season as well.

With the Grand Slam season ended for the season, Nadal continues to lead the Big-3 in terms of Top-10 wins at Grand Slam events with 49 wins from 71 matches having won 69% of the matches. Novak comes 2nd with 61 wins from 90 matches having won 68% of his ties while Federer is 3rd despite having won more matches having a record of 64 wins from 99 matches and a win % of 65.

The Big-3 have played only 2 Slams together from the last 7 Grand Slams

Since the start of the 2020 season, 7 Grand Slams have been contested with the 2020 Wimbledon being cancelled due to the Pandemic and it was not postponed during the season. Of the 7 Slams, only 2 have seen the trio of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic play together.

They played together at the 2020 Australian Open after which Federer did not play the entire season while Nadal skipped the 2020 US Open. During the 2021 season, Federer’s return to the French Open ended the streak of 3 Slams without the trio. But Nadal’s injury and withdrawal from the 2021 Wimbledon started the streak again which fans would hope ends at the 2022 Australian Open.
