18-year old Holger Rune has been one of the youngsters to impress after his exploits in the final few months of the 2021 season. After qualifying into the main-draw of the 2021 US Open where he won a set in the tie-breaker against World No. 1 Novak Djokovic before the Serbian won the match in 4-sets, he put in a few more good performances before the end of the season.

He made it to the quarter-finals of the 2021 Metz Open, results which took him to the 2021 ATP NextGen Finals where he lost in the round-robin stage as he had only 1 win to his name from the 3 matches he played. The Danish won 5 challenger titles this season and is looking for a big 2022 season where he looks certain to break into the Top-100.

While everyone around the globe has massive appreciation and respect for the trio of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic often dubbed as the Big-3, Rune does not believe that the trio deserves the pedestal they have been kept on.

“It’s great to try and compete against these guys. But they’re not gods, so they make mistakes. They sometimes make weird choices on the court because they’re so nervous. They’re just human. We’ve already seen a few new guys like Zverev and Medvedev take over,” said Rune as reported by welovetennis.fr.

“It’s still great not to see Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic” says Holger Rune

Rune who is currently ranked 103rd in the world also talked about why it is good not to have the trio of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic play regularly as the sport and the spectators need new players regularly.

“But it’s still great not to see Roger, Rafa and Novak all the time, even though they are probably the best in our sport. We miss those matches where they faced each other, but it’s always a good time for the public to have some new blood and new energy,” added Rune further.

While it is certainly a good point of view for the youngster to think that the trio is not god, he still has a long way to go before comparing the trio with newcomers as he is yet to win 10 career titles while the Big-3 have 20-Grand Slams each.
