Reilly Opelka vs John Isner: Preview
Reilly Opelka defeated Nick Kyrgios 6-3, 7-5 in the semi-finals to continue his stellar run on US soil. The 3rd seed fired 18 aces past the Australian and won 86% of his first-serve points to reach his third tour-level final of the season.
The American had a sub-par outing during the Australian hard court swing, but has turned it around with a stunning spring hardcourt season in America. He started it off with a title triumph at the Dallas Open before a runner-up finish at the Delray Beach Open. His run at the Indian Wells was cut short by Rafael Nadal in the fourth round. He currently holds a 12-3 record in the US this season.
John Isner came back from set down to defeat reigning champion, Cristian Garin 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and end the Chilean’s 8 match winning streak in Houston. The American has amassed 71 aces so far in the tournament en route to his first tour-level clay final in 9 years, which was coincidentally in Houston as well. Isner had a first-round bye and followed that with three, three-set wins to set up an all-American final against Opelka.
Reilly Opelka vs John Isner: Head-to-Head
This will be the sixth meeting of the duo. Their head-to-head currently stands at 4-1 in favor of Opelka. Their last match-up was in the semi-finals of the Dallas Open earlier this year. Opelka won the match 7(9)-6(7), 7(24)-6(22). The last set was the longest tour-level singles tie-break in the history of the ATP Tour.
Reilly Opelka vs John Isner: Prediction
Needless to say, serve will be the key in the match. Isner and Opelka are two of the most prolific servers in tennis history. Their last match up involved an astonishing 60 aces whereas the last 12 sets they contested all went to tiebreakers, and it promises to be another enthralling clash this time around as well.
2013 champion, Isner is playing in his third final in Houston whereas Opelka is playing in his first. Opelka came into the tournament with fitness concerns having withdrawn from the Miami Open with a shoulder injury. But it has not hampered his serve and has been clinical so far in the tournament. Opelka might well hold the slight edge given Isner is coming onto this match after playing three consecutive three-setters, amounting to over 6 hours on court this week.
Prediction: Reilly Opelka to win in three sets
