Clijsters who entered the tournament in Chicago as a wild card, last played competitive tennis at the 2020 US Open, where she was dumped in the opening round itself. Interestingly, the former top-ranked player came back to tennis after bidding adieu to the game almost a decade ago.

“Some good things, some bad things, and inconsistency,” the 38-year-old Clijsters said. “But I think for me the most important thing is that, what I talked with my coach and my trainer about, my fitness coach, was physically being able to get through these matches without big concerns. That was the main goal.

Expressing her respect and love for the legendary Clijsters, the Taiwanese said, “We all know that Kim is such a great great champion and off the court too. She’s very polite and kind and I always liked her and was very excited to play this match today.

Hsieh Su-wei also had little hesitation in stating that she was glad to have not met the Belgian at her peak. “I’m happy I didn’t play her 10 years ago!”

Before retiring, Clijsters had won 41 titles on the WTA tour and created history by paving way for many mothers to get back to competitive sport, post maternity.

While it remains to be seen when and where Clijsters will next play, tennis fans have already take to their Twitter accounts and heaped praise on the former World No.1.
