Barbora Krejcikova vs Garbine Muguruza: Preview

Barbora Krejcikova
Barbora Krejcikova

Barbora Krejcikova has had a breakthrough season and is the only grand slam champion of the year to play the WTA Finals at Guadalajara. She shocked the world by winning the French Open earlier this year and has been consistent ever since. She reached the Round of 16 at Wimbledon and followed it up with a title victory at Prague.

She then made it to the quarterfinal at Cincinnati and the US Open before bowing out of the Round of 16 at Indian Wells. In her first match in the WTA Finals, she lost to in form Anett Kontaveit in straight sets 3-6,4-6.

Multiple grand slam champion Garbine Muguruza hasn’t had the best season by her high standards. After getting knocked out in the first round at French Open and bowing out of the third round at Wimbledon, she reached the Round of 16 at Flushing Meadows but had a poor North American swing overall. She then won the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic and followed it up with a quarterfinal outing at Moscow where she lost to Anett Kontaveit. This week in Guadalajara, she lost her opening match to Karolina Pliskova in a three set thriller 6-4,2-6,6-7(6).

This will be the fourth meeting between the duo. Krejcikova leads the H2H 2-1. They last met at US Open earlier this year where Krejcikova won in straight sets.

Barbora Krejcikova vs Garbine Muguruza: Prediction

Barbora Krejčíková
Barbora Krejčíková

Both Krejcikova and Muguruza are coming off first round loses and whoever loses this match will be virtually out of the semifinal contention. So it is a given that both of them will consider this match as a knockout and will be on their toes. It will be a battle of defensive play on fast courts and Krejcikova will have the slightest of edge.

Prediction: Krejcikova to win in three sets.
