Brandon Nakashima

Denis Kudla who turned pro in 2010, reached a career-high ranking of 53 in 2016 and is yet to win a title on the ATP Tour. At Washington, in the round of 64, Kudla was up against world number 92 Feliciano Lopez. Kudla took the win in a thrilling 3 set match, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 to secure his place in the next round.

In the round of 32, Kudla stunned number 10 seed and fellow American, Taylor Fritz in straight sets. He broke Fritz an astonishing 5 times to take the win, 6-4, 6-2.

The young 19-year-old, Brandon Nakashima reached his career-high ranking of 89 earlier this month and is yet to win an ATP Tour title. Nakashima has had an amazing run at Washington, winning both his matches in straight sets. He first dominated on the court against Australia’s Alexei Popyrin by converting all of his 3 break points to win, 6-3, 6-3.

Next up, he triumphed over number 6 seed, Dan Evans. The first set remained close and went to a tiebreak where Nakashima played to his strengths winning the first set, 7-6 (7-1). In the second set, Nakashima played extraordinarily well and even served the British a bagel to close out the match 6-0.

Kudla will try to use his experience to his advantage having turned pro 9 years before Nakashima. However, Nakashima’s performance this year, especially the past month will give him the upper hand. He reached his first ATP Tour final in Las Cabos in July after beating 3 top 5 seed players and a week later, in Atlanta, he reached his second final.

He has a win-loss record of 8-4 across all surfaces and 8-3 on hard court and thus, all the matches he has won this year has been on hard court. On the other hand, Kudla has not performed well this year with a 5-6 win-loss record across all surfaces and 2-4 on hard court.

Match Prediction: Nakashima to win in straight sets.
