Matteo Berrettini has had a solid 2021 season. The current World No.7 won his first ATP 500 title at the Queen’s Club Championship, which was the biggest title of his career so far. He also reached the final of the Madrid Open, where he lost to world No.3 Alexander Zverev.
The Italian also made it to the ATP finals, where he was unfortunately forced to withdraw after an injury in the first round. After impressing this season, Berrettini would be eager to start the new season well with the ATP Cup.
Berrettini ready to take on Medvedev’s Russia in ATP Cup
In the 2021 ATP Cup, Berrettini’s Italy impressed and reached the final of the tournament, where they lost to a Russian team led by star-man Daniil Medvedev. The Italians would look to make amends as they’ve been handed the draw of the last final in their first-round tie.
In a recent press conference, the Italian lavished praise on Medvedev, praising his game and hailing him as the best player on hard court after Novak Djokovic.
“It is very solid. He moves very well, plays long, serves well, returns very well. When he plays well, he doesn’t miss a thing. On hard, he is probably the best player of the moment with Novak Djokovic. He is very hard to face. “- said the Italian.
The 25-year-old was also bullish on Italy’s chances in the tournament. He told the reporters that he believed that this Italian team had enough in it to win the ATP Cup this time round, and to defeat a depleted Russian side who’d be without star Andrey Rublev, who will miss out due to testing positive for Covid-19.
“I think if it’s possible, the team is even stronger this year, so for sure our aim is to get the title…We know it’s going to be a tough job. Every match is going to be difficult, but we believe that we can do it,”- said Berrettini.
