Daniil Medvedev has had one of his best years on tour so far having reached a career-high ranking of world number 2 in March. He reached the finals of the Australian Open but eventually lost to world number 1, Novak Djokovic and thus, his 20-match winning streak ended. He is the first player since 2005 to reach the top 2 rankings outside of the “Big 4”.
Medvedev made his debut at the Olympic Games in Tokyo and was drawn against Alexander Bublik in the first round. He broke Bublik in the first set to take the lead 6-4. In the second set, both players broke each other once forcing the set to go to a thrilling tie break where Medvedev took the win 7-6 (8-6). In the second round, Medvedev secured a comfortable win over Indian, Sumit Nagal in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. The Russian broke him 5 times in the match and did not give Nagal a single opportunity to break back.
Fabio Fognini is currently ranked number 31 in the world and made his third appearance at the Olympic games. Fognini lost in the first round in London in three sets against Novak Djokovic. At the Rio Olympics, he reached the third round where he lost in a tough three set match against then world number 2 and defending champion, Andy Murray. Fognini made his career-high ranking in July 2019 of world number 9.
In the first round at Tokyo, Fognini faced world number 114, Yuichi Sugita from Japan. Fognini secured his spot in the second round in 1 hour and 48 minutes after winning the match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. In the second round, Fognini took the win against Belarus’s Egor Gerasimov in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). Egor had more break point opportunities compared to Fognini but was able to convert only 2 out of 6. Fognini was successful in all his 3 break points and thus, was able to take the win.
