Monfils, who won the title in Paris in 2016, was made to work hard for his passage to the second round by Miomir Kecmanovic in the opener. The World No.22 was broken early in the first set and then Kecmanovic went on to claim the set causing the French crowd to worry over the early exit of one of their local favorites. Monfils, however went on to recover the two sets and eventually the match. The 35 year-old is 15th seed here and has a good record on the surface making him the big favorite.

Adrian Mannarino is unseeded here at the 2021 Paris Masters and is ranked 59 on the ATP Tour. The left handed Frenchman has been in poor form lately but can be an extremely tricky opponent, especially on this surface where he stores his best tennis for. Mannarino had a surprising upset win over the in-form World No.21 Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first round. The Georgian had been playing extremely well and was expected to advance, but Mannarino summoned every ounce of his experience in order to get the win.

Mannarino has been struggling lately but he tends to save his best tennis for this surface and against top opponents. Monfils has been enjoying his tennis and seems very confident, and he is one of the best players in the world in these conditions when he is feeling good.
