Andy Murray comes to San Diego after a good week in Metz where he reached the quarter-finals of the 2021 Moselle Open, his first last-8 match since 2019. The Brit has been fairly busy since his 1st round exit at the 2021 US Open playing his 3rd tournament in 3 weeks including the 2021 Renne Challenger when the ATP Tour took a break for a week after the conclusion of the US Open.

Kei Nishikori will return to the Tour for the first time since his 3rd round defeat to eventual runner-up Novak Djokovic at the US Open. Nishikori had a good run at the 2021 Washington Open where he made it to the semis but he couldn’t continue his form ahead losing in the 2nd round of the 2021 Rogers Cup before going to New York.

Murray will come into the clash with a career Hardcourt record of 363-106 on outdoor hardcourts while having a 150-43 record on indoor-hardcourts. The former World No. 1 is 13-10 for the season across all surfaces. Nishikori will take the court with a 274-129 outdoor hardcourt record while having a 101-41 record on indoor-outdoor hardcourts. Kei is currently 25-16 for the season across all surfaces.

Looking at the numbers and their recent form, Murray gets a slight edge for being the favourite as he comes from a good match practice and had a good run in Metz only to be stopped by top-seed and finalist Hubert Hurkacz.

Prediction: Andy Murray to win in 3-sets.
