Andy Murray vs Tommy Paul: Preview
Andy Murray stunned top seed Jannik Sinner in the Round of 16 of the Stockholm Open 2021 on Wednesday to march into the second tour-level quarterfinal of his season. In an engaging contest, neither player was broken in the first set, with Murray eventually taking the 75-minute set in the tiebreak. He broke the Italian twice in the second before winning the 2 hour 16 minutes contest. The two-time Olympic gold medalist had begun his Stockholm campaign with a win over Norwegian qualifier Viktor Durasovic.
The victory over the World No.10 was Murray’s second over a top 10 player this year. He had earlier beaten Hubert Hurkacz in the first round in Vienna. Wednesday’s victory means Murray is now 15-13 for the season and on Thursday, he will be aiming to reach a first semifinal since Antwerp 2019.
Tommy Paul continued his march forward in the Stockholm tournament as he pulled off an upset win over compatriot and fifth seed, Taylor Fritz on Thursday. The match began with both players exchanging breaks in the first two games, however, the World No.52 got in front with a second break and then maintained the lead to seal the first set. He also began the second set by breaking Fritz’s serve and then held on to the lead to eliminate his doubles partner 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 16 minutes.
Paul had beaten local player and son of legendary Bjorn Borg, Leo Borg 6-4, 6-2 in the first round. Thursday’s win improved Paul to 22-23 in 2021. His best runs included a semifinal finish in Parma and a last eight appearance in Rotterdam. This is the third time that the American is in a quarterfinal this year and will be hoping to keep the winning momentum going.

Andy Murray vs Tommy Paul: Match Prediction
Both the players have reached the quarter-finals stage of the Stockholm Open 2021 after pulling off extraordinary wins over their respective opponents in Round of 16.
Paul plays a solid game, not having too many weapons but being able to use his groundstrokes to win points offensively and defensively. Murray sort of plays like him, but he’s much more extreme in his style and he’s so good that even with his playstyle, his shots are still weapons that he can use given the experience earned after three Majors.
To take Murray out, Paul will have to play aggressive, Murray still plays a defensive but versatile game as he always has, if Paul can really get the shots out of his reach, he can win. Of course it’s easier said than done as it seems like a logical gameplan for any opponent however, Murray is surging with confidence after bagging two wins over top 10 contenders in two weeks therefore it will be interesting to see if the 34 year-old brit can maintain his level and take the American down to book his spot in the semifinals at the 2021 Stockholm Open.
Prediction: Murray to win in straight sets.
