Last night’s Citi Open match between tennis stars Belinda Bencic and Coco Gauff took an unexpected turn when Swiss player Bencic made a unique and urgent request for bug spray. The pleasant tennis match morphed into a war against Washington’s unrelenting mosquitoes, adding a new dimension to the players’ difficulty on the court.

As the players took to the court in the stadium’s bright lights, both fans and players noticed an unusually high number of insects flying around them. Despite the tournament organizers’ best efforts to keep the mosquito population under control, it became clear that the annoying insects were proving to be an additional opponent for the competitors.

The bugs were clearly creating discomfort, and frustration for both Bencic and Gauff as the match progressed. Bencic, on the other hand, decided to take matters into her own hands, rather literally.
