American legend Serena Williams announced a few days ago that she would be retiring from professional tennis after the 2022 US Open. This news came as a shock to fanatics all over the world as Serena has been the face of women’s tennis for the last two decades and her hanging the boots will mark a historic day in tennis history.


Fans and fellow tennis players have expressed their sadness in seeing Serena retiring and have also wished her a happy retirement. Serena has had a huge impact on women’s tennis in particular and is considered the pioneer for the change in which women’s tennis is played.

At Cincinnati, multiple grand slam champion Stan Wawrinka spoke about Serena’s retirement after losing his first-round match to Andy Murray. Wawrinka went down fighting to Murray in three sets 6-7(3),7-5,5-7 and bowed out of the tournament. In the press conference, he spoke about the impact Serena Williams had on tennis or sports in general. He also revealed how big of a fan he himself is and expressed his sadness to not see her compete after the US Open.


“Yeah, of course [I’ll miss Serena Williams], like everybody. I think she’s been amazing for the tennis, for the fans, for everybody who’s involved a little in sports in general,” he said. “I have always been a big fan with many big moments during our career, and it’s going to be of course sad to see her leaving after US Open.”

‘She crashed my party after the win’: Stan Wawrinka on Serena Williams at the 2015 French Open

Stan Wawrinka reminisced about the 2015 French Open where he defeated Novak Djokovic in the final to win his second major title. Serena Williams has the women’s singles champion at Roland Garros that year and Wawrinka recalled her crashing his party after the win.

“I think 2015 we celebrated the French Open together, and she crashed my party after the win. It was quite fun,” Wawrinka said in the press conference.

Serena Williams will be playing the Cincinnati Open as her penultimate tournament and will face US Open champion Emma Raducanu in the first round.
