The French Open has always been a breeding ground for future stars in women’s tennis. Over the past couple of years, fans have witnessed a trend of relatively unknown youngsters going all the way in Paris, and claiming the title. In 2017, it was Jelena Ostapenko, whereas, in 2020, it was the current World No. 1 Iga Swiatek.
This year promises to be no different. 16-year-old Russian teen sensation Mirra Andreeva has been tipped to spring a surprise or two at the 2023 French Open. Before she even made it to the main draw, she was more favorable than the likes of Victoria Azarenka, Belinda Bencic, and others to win the title.
Mirra Andreeva has been taking huge strides on the ITF Tour, as she already has two titles to her name this season. Her biggest break came at the 2023 Madrid Open, where she managed to reach the fourth round. She was defeated by the eventual champion, Aryna Sabalenka, in straight sets. Nevertheless, it is a definite sign of things to come in the future.
Mirra Andreeva qualifies for the main draw of the 2023 French Open
Andreeva reached her maiden Grand Slam main draw on Thursday, as she defeated the top seed Camila Osorio in the third round of qualifying. The Russian teenager has hardly put a foot wrong in qualifying, as she has not even dropped a single set.
Last year, she was competing at the French Open Juniors, where she managed to reach the quarterfinals. Mirra Andreeva could really cause an upset or two at the Roland Garros, given that she has nothing much to lose, being a first-time entrant in the main draw of the Grand Slam.
Andreeva has been climbing up the WTA Rankings over the past couple of years, on the back of her successful results. She achieved her career-best ranking of 143 last week. A good run at the upcoming French Open could perhaps help her break into the top 100 rankings. So far, the 16-year-old has won 6 titles on the ITF Tour, with three of them coming on the biggest stage at the W60 level.
