Serena Williams and Roger Federer will be out of the rankings after Wimbledon points stripped by ATP and WTA

With the latest decision of ATP and WTA to dock Wimbledon of its ranking points, Roger Federer and Serena Williams to lose big time due to it.

Tennis greats Roger Federer and Serena Williams were both last seen in action at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The two former World No. 1 ranked players picked up injuries at the Grand Slam, Serena hurting her leg after slipping in her Round 1 clash while Roger had his knee injured once again in his quarter-final defeat the following week.

Serena did try to make comeback in the remainder of the season but could not do so. As for Roger, he quickly underwent yet another surgery that resulted in him being on crutches for a long time but the Swiss has now returned to training and is confirmed to make a Tour appearance this season. With almost a season-long absence, the two players have had their rankings damaged but they are set to fall further.

With the ATP and WTA taking a joint decision to strip this year’s Wimbledon Championships of all of its ranking points as the Grand Slam and LTA refuse to allow Russian and Belarusian players, no points will be awarded for players participating this year. This would not however freeze the points from the 2021 edition and all players, as per their runs in last year’s tournament will lose points.

For Roger, the current World No. 46 and Serena, the current World No. 246, this is a bad news because since they have not played on the Tour since Wimbledon and are unlikely to play prior to the Championships, they will be removed from the rankings and added only when they return on the Tour and clinch their first set of points as and when they make a comeback.

Federer has confirmed that he will play at this year’s Laver Cup scheduled in London between 23rd September to 25th September, where he will be teaming up with Rafael Nadal as well. The 20-time major winner has also made it official to play in the 2022 Swiss Indoors where he is the 3-time defending champion and a record 10-time tournament champion.

Serena on the other hand has made no such confirmations. She had however teased her fans about making a return to Wimbledon this year. However, with the ranking points docked from the Championships, Serena might look to make a delayed return and be ready for the US Open leg as she had expressed her desire to play the US Open last year as well.
