The former World No 1, unfortunately, has had a torrid time with injuries recently, being out of action for nearly the past year and a half due to undergoing three surgeries, with his latest setback ruling him out of the Australian Open 2022. However, the Swiss is now set to make a comeback by making a return to action in March.

As Rafael Nadal surpassed him and fellow rival Novak Djokovic by becoming the first player to win 21 Grand Slams, Roger Federer yet again showed his class in the wake of the achievement. The Swiss heartily congratulated the Spaniard, while also stating that he is not worried about his records being broken. The 40-year-old added that he is the first one to be happy when someone breaks a record because of knowing how hard it is to break them.

“That is no problem. I’m the first guy to be happy for anybody who breaks any record because I know how hard it is to do”– said the Swiss maestro in chat with Credit Suisse.

The legendary Swiss also shared his thoughts on the Australian Open 2022 final, saying that though it was too long for him to watch the whole thing due to having children, he tuned in for the important moments and thoroughly enjoyed the match.

“The match took too long, and I’ve got too many children so I couldn’t watch every point, but I tuned in for the very end and it was nice to see the emotions,” said Federer.

Federer then reflected on the emotional and hard fought victory, revealing that he felt incredibly proud of his rival as the Spaniard had been telling him for some time that his body was not feeling in good shape. He then went on to lavish praise on Nadal, hailing him as a perfect role model due to his perseverance and amazing comeback.

“It gets you all emotional to see such an incredible hard fought victory…He has told me for many months now that he wasn’t feeling so well with his body and now he’s all of a sudden holding up the Australian Open trophy. And dreams come true, and I think that was a great example with Rafa. He is a great role model. I think tennis writes incredible stories,” the Swiss added.
