Serbia’s third medal and first Gold

Milica Mandic celebrates registering her country’s first Gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Serbian Milica Mandic yesterday won her country’s third medal and first gold at the 2020 Olympics. Mandic, who also won heavyweight gold at the 2012 London Games, defeated South Korea’s Lee Dabin in the women’s +67kg category final on Tuesday.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion was part of a Serbian contingent that cheered Milica on from the comfort of a TV in the very exciting Games Village. He also posted about how the Serbs reacted on knowing that she won, uploading a tweet on Twitter a video that he recorded from his own phone while celebrating.

Novak Djokovic is on a mission to win the elusive Gold

Djokovic has had 3 unsuccessful attempts at an elusive Olympics gold medal but has a medal to show for his efforts, a bronze that he won at his first Games back in 2008 after defeating James Blake of USA. In 2012, the Nole was defeated by Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro in the rain-delayed bronze medal match held at Wimbledon. 2016 was the year of the underdog and it was further proved as top seed Novak was shocked in the first round by the same person who denied him bronze in 2012, Del Potro. He left the court that day in tears, and will be hoping to have a much better showing at this year’s Olympics, where he is again top seed and odds-on favourite to take the gold medal.

Djokovic will also be motivated by the fact that he is chasing a career Golden Slam, an achievement so rare that only 4 people throughout tennis history have managed it (Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi) and only a certain Steffi Graf has won it all in one year(1988). After the Olympic gold, the Djoker will be tasked to win the US Open, which he will again enter as top seed.
