Novak Djokovic was leading the first set with a score of 6-5 against Andy Murray at the Miami Open 2014. It was Murray’s serve and on the first point, Djokovic did something unbelievable.

The world No.1 got a volley, and while hitting the ball his racquet clearly went over the net which is completely against the tennis rules. But the umpires weren’t able to notice that the racquet went over the net.

Murray kept on arguing with the umpire for not calling the foul and also asked Djokovic, who didn’t say much at that time. The umpire told Murray that in his view Djokovic was within the line. After which Murray dropped his serve and Djokovic won the first set and the match 7-5, 6-3.

Djokovic however in the post-match conference confirmed that his racquet did cross over to Murray’s side. But he tried to defend himself by saying that winning or losing such points is also a part of the game.

It might be my mistake as well, I think I cross the net with the racquet, I didn’t touch the net, Maybe the rule is you [can] not hit on his side with the racquet. I’m not sure. You tell me.” said Djokovic.

However, Murray confirmed after the match that Novak did tell him that he was over the net but the umpire didn’t listen to him. He said, “I knew it was close, So that’s why I went and asked Novak and he told me he was over the net. That was it. If it was over the net, it was over the net. I was right to complain and that’s it.”

Later Djokovic did acknowledge that losing such an important did affect Scots rhythm which could’ve affected his performance, but he did justify the call as these are a part and parcel of the game. “Obviously that distracted him, For me, it’s something as normal, If I judge that I couldn’t win the point, that I had no chance to get that ball back in court, or if I see the ball good, I’m going to tell him to challenge it. For me, it’s something that is part of the sport, and fair play. I think [I] expect everybody to do the same. Of course, not everybody else is the same, but for me, that’s something that’s normal.”
