World No.1 Novak Djokovic’s dreams of winning a gold medal at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics came to a crushing end, as the Serb got outgunned by World No.5 Alexander Zverev’s powerful game in the quarterfinals on July 30.

Just when it appeared that the 20-time Grand Slam was on his way to the finals, after winning the first set in convincing manner, the German miraculously hit back to win the match in three sets.

I feel so terrible right now, can’t be positive right now. I don’t know I feel terrible… in every sense, but tomorrow hopefully, a fresh start. I can recover and at least win one medal for my country,” Djokovic explained his disappointment to the media in Tokyo.

“It’s just sport, you know, he played better. I got to give him credit for turning the match around. He served extremely well, I was not getting too many looks on the second serve. My serve just drastically dropped, I didn’t get any free points from 3-2 up in the second. Yeah, my game fell apart, his game – he won, I think seven or eight games in a row and yeah, that was it,” the 34-year-old Serb further reasoned.

After his Calendar Golden Slam were shattered, Djokovic pinned hopes on winning the gold medal in the mixed doubles event, with partner Nina Stanjovic. Unfortunately, the top-ranked player and Stanjovic were upset by the Russian duo of Elina Vesnina and Aslan Karatsev.

Situation went from bad to worse for Djokovic after losing the bronze medal match to Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta in three sets., However, the Serb might take some solace from the fact that he already possesses the bronze medal, after achieving the same at the 2008 Beijing games
