After a stellar 2021 season, Novak Djokovic couldn’t have hoped for a worse start to his new season. A couple of months back, Djokovic looked well on course to break the three-way tie he held with Nadal and Federer for the most Grand Slam titles.

But the 20-time Grand Slam champion hasn’t even played a match so far this year. The World No.1 banked on a ‘medical exemption’ to enter Australia, but his visa was canceled and the Serb was deported from the country. If he continues to maintain his controversial stance on not being vaccinated, he might not be able to participate in major tournaments.

Djokovic will get his 2022 season underway at the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships which begins on February 21st, in which he will feature as the top seed. Unlike Australia, there is no mandatory vaccination requirement to enter Dubai.

If Djokovic was allowed to compete in Australia, he would’ve been the favorite to win the title. The Serb has won the Melbourne Major a staggering 9 times and reigned supreme in the last three editions.

Indian tennis icon Sania Mirza claimed Djokovic is on par with Federer and Nadal. She feels people often ignore Djokovic when it comes to the debate of the best player, but the World No.1 has been the most dominant player in recent times, and if he maintains this tempo he could win 15 more Australian Open titles before his retirement.

“People are talking about Federer and Nadal all the time, and some of them are forgetting about Novak Djokovic. Then, Novak reminds them that he has won 18 Major titles while being much younger than Federer. He has been the world’s leading player for a while now; he is incredibly consistent,” she said.

“Novak has won nine Australian Open crowns; he could even win 15 by retirement, depending on how much he would play. It’s a fact that Novak should win more Majors; he is incredibly well-prepared and has been playing at his peak for a couple of years,” Mirza said in an interview with Sony Six last year.
