Novak Djokovic set to play at the upcoming 2022 ATP Cup in Australia

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic is set to play at the upcoming 2022 ATP Cup that will be starting from the 1st of January in Sydney. The tournament will be held for the 3rd time and will have the Russian Tennis Federation as the defending champion as they won the Cup in 2021 before Serbia had won the inaugural edition in 2020.

The Cup sees 15 nations qualify for the Cup with the host nation Australia granted a wildcard for this year. The nations qualify based on who is the number 1 ranked player in the ATP singles ranking. Since Novak is ranked number 1 in the world, Serbia qualifies for the tournament directly.

With Djokovic not ready to disclose his vaccination status, the Serbian might be heading to Sydney which is situated in New South Wales and the Australian state has yet not announced the strict rules regarding player vaccination like the state of Victoria has where the 2022 Australian Open will take place in Melbourne in the second half of January.

This can now lead to two situations, Novak will be getting vaccinated before he heads to Australia for the ATP Cup followed by the massive Australian summer or just by the virtue of his rank, he can get Serbia qualified for the Cup but then skip the tournament keeping his vaccination status a secret.

Novak Djokovic set to release official statement soon on trip to Australia

Novak’s last media appearance was after Serbia’s defeat to Croatia in the semi-finals of the 2021 Davis Cup Finals where everyone was waiting for Djokovic’s future plans with subject to travelling to Australia given the verbal altercations between the Victorian state and Srdjan Djokovic, Novak’s father who accused the AO organisers of blackmailing Novak into playing in Melbourne next year.

Novak however maintained his silent stance and replied by just saying that he will not answer that question today as he now plans to relax after a mentally and physically tiring season and now looks to spend some time with his family and at the right time will be communicating his plans for the 2022 Australian Open and other tournaments down under.

Meanwhile, Australia’s Nick Kyrgios and Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti have confirmed that they will not be part of their respective teams as both plan to start their season a little later. Kyrgios is coming back from an injury that ended his season in October while Musetti plans for an extended break after having played at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals as well.
