‘One of the most emotional matches of my tennis career!” No dry eyes at the Rod Laver Arena as Rafael Nadal claims second Australian Open title and record 21st major

Rafael Nadal defeated Daniil Medvedev to claim his second Australian Open title, and 21st overall.

Tennis fans were treated to some spectacular action at the Rod Laver Arena, as Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev battled it out for over five hours in the final. In the end, it was Rafael Nadal who emerged victorious in five sets, after going two sets down early on the game.

Given what Rafael Nadal has been through in the past six or seven months, this is just a miracle that he could even match up to Medvedev’s level in the finals. However, he is not a 20-time major champion for nothing. He struck right back, changed around a few things and make the Russian work harder for the points.

Rafael Nadal cut into an emotional figure after doing the unthinkable on Sunday night at the iconic Rod Laver Arena. The Spaniard suffered a career threatening foot injury last year, and he may never have stepped on to the court ever again.

It’s just amazing. One month and a half ago, I didn’t even know if I would able to be here, back on the Tour,” This has been without doubt one of the most emotional matches of my tennis career,” said Nadal in his victory speech.

Rafael Nadal stated that a few months back, he felt that he would be playing his last ever Australian Open 2022. However, now he has a certain spring in his steps, as he vows to return next year as the defending champion.

Maybe one month & a half ago I would have said this would be my last Australian Open. But now that’s plenty of energy to keep going,” Nadal said.

Rafael Nadal was serving for the match in the five set, leading 5-4. However, Medvedev broke him and we were going right down to the wire. The Spaniard broke back the world number two, and this time held onto his serve. Nadal has suffered several heartbreaks in the previous years. He was inches away from winning the title in 2012 and 2017. “After Medvedev catch 5-5 I said: Fuck, one more time a break up in the 5th set and I’m gonna lose the advantage like in 2012 and 2017,” said Nadal to Eurosport.
