Matteo Berrettini is the highest-ranked Italian in the ATP circuit right now. Ranked number 10 in the world, this player is only the 4th Italian in history to have achieved this.
At only 24, this lad is one for the future. At 6 feet 5 inches tall he looks more like a basketball player though. It’s no surprise that his other favourite sport is Basketball, specifically the NBA.
Matteo Berrettini’s unique analogy
Matteo Berrettini believes, “Rafael Nadal is the LeBron of tennis, in terms of physicality and because they both exploded (on the scene) very young.”
Berrettini adds, “Roger Federer, I would compare him to Michael Jordan. Novak Djokovic reminds me of Kobe Bryant for how he remains cold (stoic) in difficult situations.”
It’s hard to disagree with Matteo’s analogy. Rafael is like a lion on the court just like LeBron. Federer’s movements are like a gazelle, similar to Jordan’s.
Novak is stoic just like Kobe was. It’s always interesting to listen to an athlete talk about a different sport. Sadly something we don’t get to hear often.
Seeded at 10th in this year’s Australian Open, Matteo will hope to better than last year’s 2nd round exit. Beyond this though, the Italian has his eyes set firmly on a Top 8 finish this year. A feat which will allow him to participate in the ATP finals.
For those of you who don’t know this yet, the ATP Finals has been shifted from the O2 arena in London to Turin, Italy. And like any true patriot, performing well at home will be on Matteo Berrettini’s mind.
