REVEALED! Emma Raducanu’s potential path to Claim her 1st Indian Wells title

Emma Raducanu

Teen sensation and World No. 22 Emma Raducanu is all set to make her debut at the upcoming Indian Wells Open 2021, her first WTA-1000 tournament and just the 3rd tournament on the Tour. The 18-year old has not played since her historic title at the 2021 US Open and had to request a wildcard to enter the tournament as her rank when the entries closed was still World No. 150.

However, her achievements in New York made sure that the wildcard was granted to the young Grand Slam champion and she need not play the qualifiers to enter the main-draw. Emma is yet to win a match on the WTA Tour as both of her previous two tournaments saw her getting defeated in the first round.

Since then, she has improved very much and is well in contention to register her first tour win in one of the biggest tournaments, which is often cited as the ‘5th Grand Slam of tennis’. Seeded 17th in the tournament, she gets a bye in the first round and will begin her campaign in the 2nd round directly where she is most likely to meet Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

She will be the favourite against Sasnovich and is most likely to meet her growing up idol, Simona Halep in the 3rd round as the Romanian Grand Slam winner prepares for her first tournament since getting married. If Emma moves past Halep, she is most likely to meet former World No. 2 and 2-time Grand Slam champion Petra Kvitova in the Round of 16.

Raducanu could then set a clash with 2020 Tokyo Olympics Bronze medallist Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals in what will be their first career meeting. Svitolina has been fairly consistent this season and will be eyeing for her 5th WTA-1000 title in the coming week. Raducanu has herself been in great form and it will be a thrilling clash between the two.

Hoping Raducanu moves past Svitolina, she is likely to face 2nd seeded and 2020 French Open winner Iga Swiatek. Iga has also been in good form lately but has somehow failed to win at the business end and it might be the edge Emma has after her surprise win in New York last month.

Following the seedings, from the top-half, top-seeded Karolina Pliskova will be the final obstacle in Emma’s path to her maiden tour title. Pliskova has been in great form ever since her runner-up finish at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships but is yet to win a title this season.
