Former Croatian professional and current coach of 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer, Ivan Ljubicic has been one of the most important additions to the Federer camp. Joining Federer in 2016 after a 3 years stint with Milos Raonic from 2013 to 2015, Ljubicic has been credited in making Federer’s game more offensive and has improved the Swiss’s backhand.

Ever since Federer injured his knee at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships and sat out of the next tournaments, tennis fans are curious when will they see the former World No. 1 back in action. Federer eventually had to go for another surgery that ruled him out of the season and the date of his comeback in the 2022 season remains a mystery.

The 40-year old did make a visit to the 2021 Laver Cup where he was seen walking on crutches. Federer however has remained firm on his decision to play again on the Tour and Ivan confirmed it as well much to the satisfaction of the fans but at the same time dropped big shocking news.

Speaking to SkySport TV, Ivan said, “Roger Federer is very unlikely to play the Australian Open. He is 40 and doesn’t recover as fast as before. But he wants to compete again and won’t retire all of a sudden. We will be able to see Roger again next year. I don’t know when exactly, but he is undergoing rehabilitation. He is recovering slowly, he is not in a hurry.”

Federer had been a constant at the Australian open ever since he made his debut in 2000 and played 21 consecutive tournaments before he missed his first-ever at the 2021 Australian Open while he was recovering from a surgery in 2020.

While Federer’s participation is almost cancelled, the first Grand Slam of the season will again be without the favourite tennis trio of the Big-3. Rafael Nadal has hinted well towards his trip to Melbourne next year but Novak Djokovic‘s stance on the vaccination and his row with the Victorian Premier who continues to emphasise compulsory vaccination. could see Novak not playing.
