Federer was out of action for more than a year due to a knee injury and returned earlier this year in Doha. He also played a short Clay season, competing at Geneva and Paris. Interestingly, he pulled out of the French Open before his Fourth round match to give himself more time to recover for the upcoming Grass season.

Roger Federer not thinking of a record 21st slam at Wimbledon

Rafael Nadal couldn’t get to 21 slams in Paris, which means Federer still has a chance to get the all-time lead once again at Wimbledon this year. He will turn 40 this year and this could be realistically his last opportunity to win a major. But the Swiss isn’t thinking about slams and just wants to enjoy tennis.

“It seems it’s all about Grand Slam titles nowadays and I don’t like that,” Federer said. “When I came on the tour, it wasn’t just about the Slams. It was Pete Sampras who triggered this and suddenly said that now only the Slams would be of interest to him.”

“In the future, more players will win Grand Slam tournaments anyway. The Slams have certainly given me a lot, and they offer tennis a big stage but after my 15th I didn’t really care whether I had 15, 16, 17 or 18. I just wanted to break Sampras’ record, everything else was a bonus. As long as we (three) play everything is possible, at the end, the accounting will be done.”

It will be interesting to watch the level of Federer’s game at Wimbledon this time around and whether he could stop a red-hot Novak Djokovic from winning his 20th slam will be the biggest question.
