6-time champion and the most successful player at the Year-End Championships Roger Federer has not played at the ATP Finals since his semi-final exit at the 2019 tournament and has now missed the tournament for two successive years because of his surgeries in 2020 and 2021.
Federer watched this year’s tournament from his home in Switzerland where he is currently rehabilitating from this year’s surgery that left him on crutches and has him on the sidelines for quite a few months which will make him skip nearly the first half of the season with even the 2022 Wimbledon being a massive doubt for the 8-time Wimbledon champion.
With Turin hosting the ATP Finals for the first time and scheduled to be the host city till 2025, it is expected to be a massive boost for Italian tennis which is said to be in one of its finest periods with young champions leading the way and taking Italian tennis to a new height.
Matteo Berrettini, Lorenzo Sonego and young guns Lorenzo Musetti and Jannik Sinner have become the flagbearers of Italian tennis and are receiving praise for their achievements. Speaking about the growing tennis from Italy, Federer said, “Between Berrettini, Sinner, Sonego and Musetti, Italy has a truly extraordinary new generation of players.”
“And the fact that it is now the host country of the ATP Finals, it will make the movement grow even more. I’m watching the tournament on TV and I must say it reminds me a lot of the O2 Arena in London but I’m sure there is that Italian touch that has always me love Italian people and Italy in general,” added Federer.

This year’s ATP Finals had the 34-year old Novak Djokovic as the eldest player at the tournament with the remaining players having an average age of 23 years. While Federer did heap praise on Djokovic for his fantastic season this year, the former World No. 1 also took note of the young guns who have risen well to the occasion this season.
“The matches have been incredible. What I love to see is also all the players being really consistent, the Medvedevs, the Rublevs, the Zverevs, with Novak we can always expect it but the younger guys are really stepping up and are playing great tennis, it’s been fun to watch,” said Federer.
