Rublev comes into Indian Wells after losing in the semifinals of Chicago to Britain’s Cameron Norrie. The Russian has been taking leap strides forward on the ATP tour this year, owing to which he has moved to a career-high-ranking of five. On the hard courts too, Rublev has been impressive. With a semifinal run in Doha, Dubai and Miami earlier in the year, the 23-year-old has enjoyed his time on the hard surface. He also reached the finals of the Cincinnati Masters, before the 2021 US Open. The No.5 seed is going to be one of the favourites to win the tournament in the desert for the first time.

On the other hand, Taberer comes into this match after beating countryman Jaume Munar in the first round. Although the Spaniard did make the quarterfinals of Nur-Sultan last week, he hasn’t played much on the hard courts this season. For 2021, Taberer has only played four matches on the hard surface, with a 50% win/loss record. Hence, it will be a tough for the 24-year-old to make any progress beyond the second round.

Rublev will walk into this contest as the overwhelming favourite, and one would expect him to live up to his billing. If the Russian can find his range at the very beginning, then the Spaniard is likely to struggle to keep pace in the rally. Should be a comfortable win for Rublev.

Match Prediction: Andrey Rublev should win in two sets.
