“Tough Decision To Make”: Serena Williams says she is ‘physically’ not fit to compete in the 2022 Australian Open

Serena Williams is a name to reckon with in the world of tennis. After winning 23 Grand Slam titles, her hunger to achieve more hasn’t reduced at all. There aren’t many records the superstar American has not broken. However, she has been chasing her 24th Grand Slam title for a while now.

Moreover, Serena has been plagued by recurring injuries in the 2021 season. The star athlete competed in only 6 tournaments in the entire season and finished outside the Top 40 for the first time since 2006. She was last seen on the court at Wimbledon where she had to withdraw mid-game in her opening round clash due to a hamstring injury.

Although fans were a little skeptical about Serena’s comeback on the court in the 2022 Australian Open as she has been away from the game for quite a while, they were anyway hoping to see the champion player back in action. However, all their hopes were dashed when Serena informed that she will not participate in the first Grand Slam of the 2022 season.

The 2022 Australian Open, which will be held from January 17 to 30 in Melbourne will not have the tennis great from America competing in it. Serena has won the tournament as many as 7 times. Announcing her withdrawal, Serena claimed, “while this is never an easy decision to make, I’m not where I need to be physically to compete.”

Melbourne is one of my favorite cities to visit, and I look forward to playing at the Australian Open every year. I will miss seeing the fans, but I’m excited to return and compete at my highest level,” Serena further added. Fans would be eager to know as to when Serena can script a comeback on the court.
