Serena Williams is considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time, having collected 39 grand slams, multiple Olympic gold medals, and many other accolades. Outside of her own sport, Williams and her husband, internet entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian are huge Formula One fans. They, in particular, always seem to root for Britain’s Lewis Hamilton.
Lewis Hamilton is a racing driver from Great Britain. He competes in Formula One events, under the banner of Mercedes. Previously, he represented the British team McLaren (2007-2012). Last year, Hamilton joined the ranks of the legend Michael Schumacher, after winning a record 7th World Driver’s Championship Title.
The 7-time F1 champion and the winner of 23 grand slam titles are frequently seen attending each other’s tournaments. The show of support often includes social media posts, boosting each other. Now, Alexis Ohanian is a part of the group, staunchly rooting for Hamilton.
Hamilton and his title rival Max Verstappen were level on points coming into the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Verstappen started the race on pole with Hamilton starting on the front row alongside him. The Brit got a great launch and took the lead into turn 1. He kept his lead for pretty much all the race until a late safety car drama allowed Max to pit for softs.
Alexis Ohanian fumes over FIA’s decision
What was controversial regarding the safety car was that only the 5 lapped cars between Hamilton and Verstappen were allowed to pass the safety car. To make things even worse, the cars didn’t even join back before the safety car came in to allow one lap of racing.
Alexis called out FIA for this and tweeted, “THIS IS BULLS**T @F1.”
He further wrote, “CONGRATULATIONS, SAFETY CAR #AbuDhabiGP” expressing his disappointment over the turn of events. Whether the decision was correct or not will always be a point to debate but latest, the stewards have dismissed Mercedes’ double protest meaning that Max Verstappen will stay the 2021 World Champion.
