French Open 2021: Former champion Simona Halep pulls out due to calf injury

Simona Halep‘s injury woes continue as she is forced to pull out from the upcoming 2021 French Open due to the calf injury she suffered mid-match in the 2nd round of the WTA Italian Open 2021.

Halep has been a dominant force on Clay over the past decade giving consistent performances on the red soil surface. She reached 3 finals at the Roland Garros in 2014, 2017 and 2018 winning the trophy finally in the 2018 edition.

Apart from the Grand Slam, the World No. 3 won the big titles in Madrid and Rome as well winning back-to-back titles in Madrid in 2016 and 2017 and was the defending champion at the 2021 Italian Open with her title-run in the 2020 edition.

The Romanian star confirmed her withdrawal from the French Open via her official twitter handle.

This is Simona Halep’s 8th injury in 7 years and now puts her title defense at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships in doubt as she was the last champion at the 2019 Wimbledon as the 2020 Wimbledon was cancelled due to the Pandemic.

However, the Wimbledon is scheduled to start in the last week of June that gives the Romanian enough time to assess and plan her comeback ahead of the start of the Grass season.
