“Stefanos Tsitsipas would do anything to play tennis, I can’t do that,” says Nick Kyrgios

World No. 95 Nick Kyrgios says he can't be like Stefanos Tsitsipas and devote his entire life just to play tennis.

World No. 95 Nick Kyrgios continues his recovery from the injury that ended his season quite early in the 2021 season. The Australian did not play on the Tour again after his first round defeat at the 2021 US Open. He did feature for the Team World at the 2021 Laver Cup but lost in the only match he played at the tournament, his 5th consecutive defeat of the season.

Kyrgios is often criticised for his approach towards the game being casual and not as focused as he should be given the potential he has shown at times. This has often led to ex-players and coaches calling him out for wasting his talent and not making use of the skills he possesses.

The Australian has hit back to this criticism time and again and has always maintained his stance that every player is different and he does not have the ambition to win just the Grand Slams and being happy with whatever he has achieved so far. Kyrgios took the example of fellow Tour player Stefanos Tsitsipas to explain his point of view.

“Stefanos would do anything and devote his life to playing tennis. He is an expert in dietetics, he does yoga, stretching, and the gym. I might not do that, but I wouldn’t say I respect him more just because he does that. Everyone is different,” said Kyrgios in one of his recent podcast that he has started with his childhood friends.

With a big Australian summer coming up, Kyrgios hopes to return on the Tour and play the maximum tournaments possible and has started working out for the 2022 Australian Open as well, which is his favourite tournament as said by the Australian himself.

Kyrgios’s best result at the Melbourne Park came in 2015 when he made it to the quarter-finals. Since then he has reached the 4th round only twice. Nick lost in a thrilling 5-setter in the 3rd round of the 2021 Australian Open to Dominic Thiem and did not play again on the Tour till the 2021 Wimbledon.
