Jan-Lennard Struff vs Carlos Alcaraz: Preview

Jan-Lennard Struff

The big-serving German kicked off his 2021 French Open by stunning Andrey Rublev in five-epic sets in the opening round. He then dismissed Facundo Bagnis in straight sets in round two. Out of 16 matches on the clay this season, Struff has won 10. He started his clay court swing for 2021 by reaching the quarterfinals of Cagliari and followed it up by making the finals of Munich, where he was downed by Nikoloz Basilashvili. Although he went through a rough patch in Madrid and Rome, he has played considerable amount on clay ahead of the French Open. The 31-year-old will now be looking ahead to making the fourth round of Roland Garros for the second time in his career.

On the other hand, the young Spaniard is coming into this round after playing three qualifying rounds in Paris. That said, he has only dropped a set in the last five matches he has played in the 2021 French Open. His triumph over Basilashvili in the second round would have lifted the confidence of the 18-year-old. Similar to his opponent, he too has played plenty of matches on the dirt this season. Alcaraz has already shown his clay court skills by beating specialists Feliciano Lopez and Casper Ruud.

Jan-Lennard Struff vs Carlos Alcaraz: Prediction

Jan-Lennard Struff

Struff has already served 40 aces in this tournament and that will be his biggest weapon in this match against the spirited Spanish youngster. The German will also be pleased that he didn’t play a long match in the second round, after his heroics against Rublev. Meanwhile, for Alcaraz winning points on the return of serve will be the key. Although the teenager is coming into this match with momentum, it is likely that he will be over-powered by his big hitting opponent.

Match Prediction: Jan-Lennard Struff should win in five sets.
