Twitter reacts to ATP’s weak statements regarding the Peng Shuai case

Twitteratis slam ATP over their weak statement in the Peng Shuai disappearance case.

Peng Shuai

The entire tennis community is concerned from the sudden disappearance Peng Shuai since almost a month. She accused former Chinese Communist party leader Zhang Gaoili of sexual assault back on November 2. Ever since then, it is speculated that Peng had to suffer the consequences for speaking up against the Chinese regime.

A lead surfaced the internet claiming that Peng attended a tennis event in Beijing but it was soon rubbished as it was floated by a Chinese media affiliated source. Ever since then voices have only become stronger for Peng.

Top tennis bodies like the ITF, ATP and WTA have issued statements regarding the same. WTA even suspended all the tours in China until further notice. But unlike them, ATP issued a rather vague statement which doesn’t say much about their stand.

“The situation involving Peng Shuai continues to raise serious concerns within and beyond our sport. The response to those concerns has so far fallen short. We again urge for a line of open direct communication between the player and the WTA in order to establish a clearer picture of her situation. We know that sport can have a positive influence on society and generally believe that having a global presence gives us the best chance of creating opportunity and making an impact. We will continue to consult with our members and monitor any developments as this issue evolves,” the statement read.

Ever since the statement was released, twitteratis have slammed the tennis body calling them weak and spineless.
