Daniil Medvedev‘s wait for a Grand Slam title finally ended when he won the US Open 2021 title in his 3rd Grand Slam final. Up against World No. 1 and crowd favourite for the finals Novak Djokovic, Daniil played one of the best tennis of his life to defeat Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 and get his name engraved on the US Open trophy.

This was the 2nd US Open finals for the 25-year old after he had made his way to the 2019 US Open finals but had to settle for the runners-up trophy as Spaniard Rafael Nadal went on to win his 4th US Open title after defeating Medvedev in a thrilling 5-set battle.

Medvedev was serving for the Championship point and fired his serve to the sides to which Djokovic could not respond in time and the ball failed to cross the net making Medvedev the champion in New York. With Medvedev on the court, there is never a dull moment and with this being the biggest win of his career, Medvedev had a special celebration.

As soon as he won the point, Medvedev stood frozen and dropped on the floor, a celebration he copied from FIFA where it is called the ‘Deadfish’. Medvedev is a big-time FIFA player and answering what the celebration was all about he said it’s just the combination of L2 + Left on the Playstation controller that is used in the celebration of a goal in the game.

Medvedev later admitted that dropping on the floor like that did hurt him a little. “It’s not easy to make it on Hardcourt, I got hurt a little bit but I’m happy I made it legendary for myself.”

For FIFA fans, Medvedev’s celebration was no surprise but for others, it was a new thing to witness especially on the tennis court. In no time, memes and edits of Medvedev’s celebration got viral. Daniil who himself has a good and sporting sense of humour, took to his Twitter handle to ask his fans to get creative with his images.
