Sharapova walked the red carpet along with Gilkes and the couple was one of the most popular couples on the carpet and were flocked for photograph requests by the media personnel on the scene. The dress worn by Maria took one year to be made and required 800+ hours of handwork by the Iris Van Herpen team and was made using hundreds of recycled Evian water bottles which were 75% of the material & organic couture silk.

“Once you see the pieces up close, you appreciate the level of craftsmanship and thought that goes into them. She’s an artist. One of the reasons we all notice her work is because it’s so sculptural. All the different forms and shapes that she utilises fit the body so well. Before this, I hadn’t worn one of her dresses, but I’d admired her creativity for so long,” said Maria about the designer.

“It took some time to see if the material itself would be up to our standards, but it all turned out beautifully. Evian has done fashion projects before – every year, they collaborate with a designer on a special bottle – but this allowed them to put creativity at the forefront while reducing waste,” said Maria.

“Being able to see the attention to detail that everyone there put into all the dresses they were working on was so impressive. [Iris and I] were able to spend a few hours together, and just seeing her process was incredible. With Iris, you see that futurism and the side of fashion that is purely about work ethic,” added the former World No. 1.

With a dress that gave a message of sustainability, it was one of the most popular dresses at the event and even followers were impressed by her efforts praising her for such a good initiative.
