Despite being one of the strongest players of the current times both on and off the pitch, Naomi Osaka had a shocker against American Amanda Anisimova, to whom the Japanese crashed out of the Australian Open 2021 in straight sets. The 24-year-old never looked at her best, having loads of unforced errors scattered throughout the match.

The shock upset was one of the biggest in this season’s Australian Open to date, with Anisimova setting up a clash with World No.1 and tournament favourite Ashleigh Barty in the fourth round. Anisimova had previously also defeated 22nd seed Belinda Bencic in the second round of the tournament. The final scoreline in the Osaka vs Anisimova match came to be 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10/5).

Post the defeat, Naomi Osaka put up a brave face in the media while being under heavy scrutiny for such a disastrous defence of her Australian Open crown. The Japanese said publically that she wasn’t bothered with the exit and her ranking set to fall below 80, with the superstar pledging to make a comeback and work hard to take her ranking and performance back to where they should be.

However, in a video later, Naomi could be seen vulnerable and in tears post the defeat. In the video, Osaka seems inconsolable, with her team trying to console the distraught Japanese. Despite the brave front she put up publically, it was clear to see how dissapointed she was with her performance and how much the sport means to her.

However, in the comments of the video, many people criticized the broadcasters airing this bit while intruding the privacy of the Japanese. Osaka clearly didn’t want the world to see her vulnerable as she put up a brave face in front of the press, but her purpose was defeated after the cameras aired her being vulnerable in what she thought was a safe space with only her trusted people around. The video is definitely hard to watch as it is difficult to see such a superstar like Naomi in tears.
