Coco Gauff turned pro in 2018. She is the youngest player ranked in the top 100 by the Women’s Tennis Association. In 2019, she made her WTA debut at the Miami Open and won her opening match. The young American broke onto the scene at 2019 Wimbledon after beating Venus Williams. The then 15-year-old reached the fourth round and further made headlines. She is already being billed as the future of women’s tennis.

The young tennis phenom had success as a junior and earned a sponsorship to train at Patrick Mouratoglou’s academy in France. Mouratoglou coached Serena Williams since 2012 so Gauff was in good hands. At 13, Gauff began playing on the ITF Junior Circuit and she finished runner-up at the junior 2017 US Open. She would become the No. 1 junior in the world after winning the junior Grand Slam singles title at the 2018 French Open.

Ranked 25 in the world, Gauff has been one of the best players in the women’s game on clay this season. After reaching the quarterfinals in Charleston, Gauff did make a first round stumble in Madrid. However, the 17-year-old recovered to find her momentum back and made the finals in Rome, before she was beaten by reigning French Open winner, Iga Swiatek.

On her way to the finals, Gauff had beaten, Ashleigh BartyMaria Sakkari and Aryna Sabalenka. The American’s breakthrough came in Parma last week, when she won the title in Italy. Gauff only dropped one set on her way to the final and comprehensively beat Qiang Wang in the finals.

Currently, Gauff has a 12-3 win/loss record on the dirt in 2021 and going by her current form, she will be one of the dark horses at the upcoming French Open. She was ousted in the second round of the French Open in 2020. Gauff has already shown us the power in her game. If she can get add more consistency to her shot making, she can take leap strides forwards on the WTA tour going ahead.
