Daniil Medvedev vs Marin Cilic: Match Preview
Medvedev started his Wimbledon campaign on a winning note by beating Jan-Lennard Struff in four sets. It was a shaky start by the 2nd seed against the German as he lost a set but won the match with the score line of 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6. In the 2nd round, Medvedev was up against young Spaniard, Carlos Alcaraz Garfia. The 18 year old played some wonderful shots but Medvedev was too good for him as he defeated him in straight sets. The score line of the match was 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 The Russian last played at the Mallorca Open where he was the last man standing. It was a good start to the grass court season for the Russian. He defeated Sam Querrey in the final in straight sets with the score line of 6-4, 6-2.
The world number 2 did have a good run in the French Open as he made it to the quarter finals and ultimately lost to the eventual finalist, Stefanos Tsitsipas. He lost to the world number 4 in straight sets with the score line of 3-6, 6-7, 5-7. The playing style of Medvedev is more suited to play in fast courts. So, it will be interesting to see how Medvedev performs in Wimbledon this year.
Cilic won against Salvatore Caruso in the first round convincingly. He won in straight sets with the score line of 7-6, 7-6, 6-1. In the 2nd round, Cilic was up against Benjamin Bonzi. He won the match in 4 sets with the score line of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6. The world number 37 reached the quarter finals of the Queen’s Club Championships where he lost to Alex De Minaur in three sets with the score line of 6-3, 3-6, 4-6. The former US Open Champion also played at Stuttgart Open where he was the last man standing. He had beaten Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final with the score line of 7-6, 6-3.
The veteran also played at the French Open where he reached the second round but ultimately lost to the veteran and 20 time grand slam champion, Roger Federer. The Croatian lost to Federer in four sets with the score line of 2-6, 6-2, 6-7, 2-6. It will be interesting to see how he performs at Wimbledon this year.
