Wimbledon 2021: Qualifying draw out, Ramanathan, Gunneswaran handed tricky paths

The 2021 Championships at Wimbledon will begin from June 21 with Gentleman’s Qualifying and the draw for the same is out. A huge draw of 128 has been drawn out of which 16 players will advance into the main draw. Each player will have to win 3 matches in order to make it to the main draw.

The qualifying draw this year consists of some big names who have lost touch in recent times and also has some young guns who would want to stamp their authority. Former top 50 member, Victor Troicki, big server Ivo Karlovic, Australian Bernard Tomic and former world no.5 Tommy Robredo are amongst the big names present in the draw.

World no.112 Kamil Majchrzak goes in as the top seed in the draw and is expected to face Juan Cerundolo in the third round. In form Mackenzie McDonald is the second seed and could face countryman Maxime Cressy in the third round. Belgrade Open runner up Andrej Martin is the third seed and could face Brandon Nakashima in the third round.

India’s No.1 Singles player, Sumit Nagal will miss this year’s Wimbledon and in his absence, the duo of Ramkumar Ramanathan and Prajnesh Gunneswaran will lead the country’s charge. Both the players have amazing grass court game and would want to make it to the main draw.

Gunneswaran is the 29th seed in the draw and will face Briton Arthur Fery in the opening round on Monday. He is then expected to face Australian Matthew Ebden in the second round before facing a tricky third round opponent in eighth seed Tallon Griekspoor in the third round.

As for Ramanathan, he will have to play his best game to make it to the main draw. He faces 13th seed Slovak Jozef Kovalik in the opening round. The other highest ranked opponent in his section of the draw is Marc Polmans. Both the Indians will be in action on Monday.
