Ash Barty‘s decision to retire from professional tennis has left the world stunned. Having spent a consecutive 112 weeks at the top of the rankings winning 3 majors all before the age of 25, not many could comprehend why did the Australian decide to call it quits on her career while being in the form of her life.

Barty however answered the question pretty well revealing that there was no hunger left anymore in her having achieved all of her dreams in the sport. With three majors coming on all different surfaces and her last match ever being the finals of the 2022 Australian Open that made her the first Australian in 44 years to win the Slam, she felt there was no better way to bid adieu to the sport.

With reactions and tributes pouring in for Ash, compatriot and tennis legend Rod Laver also took a moment to congratulate the champion player on her retirement as she now moves to explore her other life wishes as per her own admission. Laver was present during Barty’s win in Melbourne Park this year with the finals played in the Rod Laver Arena and had expressed his delight even then on what a great achievement it was for Barty and all of Australia.

“Dear Ash, news of your tennis retirement has stunned the world. You march to your own drum with humility and a beaming smile. You are a winner in every sense and I admire you greatly. I wish you great happiness and health,” tweeted Laver through his official handle on the social media platform while also sharing the video uploaded by the official handle of the Australian Open that had Barty meeting Laver and other legends after her title-clinching win in January.

Barty says goodbye to tennis as one of the only 3 Australian ladies to win a major on all 3 surfaces. Margaret Court and Barty’s mentor Evonne Goolagong Cawley are the only other two women from the 18 Grand Slam women’s champions Australia has produced to win a title on all surfaces.

While Court remains the only Australian woman to achieve a Career Slam, winning Grand Slam titles on all surfaces, it could have been a matter of time before Barty matched the feat. Nevertheless, a fantastic career has certainly come to an end but the legacy of Barty for inspiring so many will continue.
