Iga Swiatek and Daniil Medvedev resumed their fun ‘pretzel’ banter from some time ago. For those who are unaware, Swiatek had recently said that Medvedev resembles a Pretzel while playing.
This conversation had taken place between the duo when they had joined an Instagram live session conducted by manufacturer Technifibre.

Over a month ago, world no. 11 world no. 9 Iga Swiatek joined world no. 2 Daniil Medvedev on an Instagram live session. A hilarious banter ensued during the 2-minute session. Referring to the Russian’s unique style of hitting shots, the Pole called him a ‘pretzel’, which happens to be a German baked pastry, formed in the shape of a knot. “Actually we’re going to work on me not playing like a pretzel. Sorry Daniil, but I was watching your games, wait, maybe in English it’s not a pretzel?” said Swiatek.
Iga clarified that she didn’t mean to insult Daniil, saying “It’s just bread, that, I like..I don’t want you to feel bad about it, but I mean, you make these weird poses, hitting backhands. It’s great, I love watching that.”

Laughing at Iga Swiatek’s analogy, Daniil Medvedev said “No one has ever called me a pretzel before. Okay, it’s gonna be one of my many nicknames that I have.”
The 2021 US Open champion proceeded to explain his style of play, saying “I mean, since I was young, I was really uncoordinated. So that’s how I was playing, you know? Everybody was hitting strong at me, and I was doing lobs. I mean, I have nothing much to it. So I was not not doing amazing technically, but I always wanted to win. So I tried to find shots that would annoy my opponent because they were better than me. Technically physically, they were better, but I wanted to win. So that’s how I think my technique developed.”

Recently, Daniil Medvedev put up a picture of him holding a pretzel on his Instagram story, tagging Iga Swiatek in it. A happy Swiatek re-shared the picture, captioning it “You literally made my day”. She also wrote “(Today I was a pretzel on court)”, possibly referring to her practice sessions for the upcoming tournaments.
