Alexander Zverev vs Grigor Dimitrov: Preview
After a productive performance in the Austrian capital, Zverev won his first victory on the Paris courts in his opener against Dusan Lajovic (6-3;7-6). The 24 year-old German has been playing some unbelievable tennis, making deep runs in all the slams this year thereby asserting himself as one of the top players on the ATP tour.
The Olympic gold medalist has compiled quite a record this season. He’s now 53-13 on had courts and since Tokyo, is 26-2. Those two losses were a five-setter against Novak Djokovic in the US Open semifinals, and a final-set tiebreak against Taylor Fritz in Indian Wells.
Grigor Dimitrov got a tough win over Karen Khachanov, dropping the first set to storm back and dominate the next two sets. Khachanov actually lifted the title a few years back, and for Dimitrov to win two matches here and set up a meeting with one of the best players in the world in Alexander Zverev is an excellent feat.
The Bulgarian has redeemed himself from his disastrous 2019 season in which he dropped to as low as No.78 in world ranking and has since managed to haul himself to a top 20 ranking. The Bulgarian’s run at the Indian Wells this year was one to remember where he got the better of top players including Daniil Medvedev before he lost to eventual champion, Cameron Norrie.
Alexander Zverev vs Grigor Dimitrov: Head to head
Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov have met 3 times before, with Zverev leading the head to head 2-1. Their head to head matches are practically irrelevant, considering they came in 2014 and 2016. They have not played in over five years.
Alexander Zverev vs Grigor Dimitrov: Match Prediction
This will be an interesting encounter, with a top player like Sascha and Dimitrov, who can beat anyone on his day.
The conditions in Paris are great for the young German. Zverev is an all-courter, he can bring his best stuff on any surface, but a slow hard court might be his best surface, he hits huge groundstrokes with big backswings, so if he has the time to hit big and his ball is going to travel fast as it goes to his opponents side, then he will have a decisive edge.
Dimitrov will have to try and keep the rallies to Zverev’s forehand, but even if he is able to do that, he will have to go a step further and start to be the aggressor, which is much easier said than done. But on an indoor hard court, where Sascha has won four titles over the last three years, the German is a strong favorite to advance.
Prediction: Alexander Zverev to win in straight sets.
